This print features Puakenikeni, a beloved flower in Hawai’i once nicknamed the “ten cent flower” because lei made from it were said to cost ten cents long ago. Puakenikeni is one of my favorite flowers, known for its beautiful fragrance and the way its color changes as it ages. The flower first blooms white, then slowly turns yellow and eventually deepens to orange as it gets older.
The flower is very delicate and does not last long once picked. Because of this, we learn to cherish the short time we have with it, sometimes only a few hours, before it begins to wilt.
